Journey of a Freshie began back in early 2010 when original author Helen Carnate first began practicing with New Hampshire Roller Derby. It was a different time for the sport, riding high on publicity from Drew Barrymore's movie "Whip It." Fishnets, tutus, and crazy socks were still en vogue and new leagues were springing up like weeds.

For Helen, writing about how she felt after each practice was therapeutic. She came to derby with minimal athletic and skating background and was truly getting in on the ground floor. Some practices were great, others not so much. She wrote about it all, and thanks to the magic of Google, other freshmeat who were dealing with some of the same things found the posts helpful.

In the spring of 2011, a combination of factors caused Helen to resign from skating, though she remained a volunteer for NHRD. In 2012 she found herself announcing for the league and in 2013 she began announcing full time, traveling nationally for various multi-day tournaments. At the 2014 East Coast Derby Extravaganza she was approached by a skater who thanked her for writing that freshmeat blog a few years ago. Filled with warm fuzzies, she decided to hunt for new freshmeat from a variety of leagues and countries to be contributors so that Journey of a Freshie could live again.
